From June 1 to June 14, 2019, at the invitation of Associate Research Fellow Guo Zhi, Professor Luis Rivera from the University of Strasbourg, EOST, visited the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration, and gave an academic talk entitled “Evidence for a large strike-slip component during the 1960 Chilean earthquake”. In the presentation, Professor Rivera re-analyzed the deformation data for the 1960 Chile earthquake and found that, in addition to subduction, there was also an obvious strike-slip component in that earthquake. Professor Rivera's presentation showed that re-study of historical seismic data can improve our understanding of historical earthquakes.

As part of the cooperative research between associate research fellow Guo Zhi and Professor Luis Rivera on the project “Using historical seismic maps to study the 1920 Haiyuan earthquake”, Professor Rivera went to Haiyuan in Ningxia Province for geological fieldwork and to Sheshan Earthquake Station in Shanghai to collect historical seismic map data on the 1920 Haiyuan earthquake.

In addition to his presentation at the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration, Professor Rivera was invited to give academic presentations at the China Earthquake Networks Center and Peking University.
