Doctoral candidate Luuk B. Hunfeld from Utrecht University, Netherlands, visited our institute

At the invitation of Researcher Ma Shengli and Associate Research Fellow Chen Jianye,doctoral candidate Luuk B. Hunfeld from the high-temperature and high-pressure laboratory of Utrecht University made an academic presentation entitled“Frictional properties of simulated fault gouges from the seismogenic Groningen gas field: From low (nucleation) to high (seismic) slip velocities”in conference room 204 of our institute on June 5, 2019.

Luuk B. Hunfeld is currently a doctoral candidate in the high-temperature and high-pressure laboratory of Utrecht University, Netherlands. His main work in his doctoral research is to study the frictional properties of faults in natural gas reservoirs in the Groningen Gas Field in the Netherlands, and infer the possibility that small displacements might induce earthquakes through friction experiments.Some of his work has been published in JGR and G3.

During the presentation, Luuk B. Hunfeld first reported the main results of his slow friction experiments in the high-temperature and high-pressure laboratory of Utrecht University. The experimental study of the strength and frictional stability of different reservoirs in the Groningen Gas Field demonstrated that when the reservoir is rich in anhydrite, dolomite and other minerals, earthquakes may be induced under appropriate temperature and pressure conditions. In the second part his presentation, Luuk B. Hunfeld reported on the preliminary conclusions of the high-speed friction experiments that he conducted with the high-speed friction machine in the Tectonophysics Laboratory of our institute.

More than 30 scientific research personnel attended the presentation, and the participants enjoyed a fruitful discussion. The academic atmosphere was lively and participants benefitted a great deal.
