Researcher Pei Shunping from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited our institute

At the invitation of Researcher Chen Xiaobin and Sun Jianbao, Researcher Pei Shunping from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research gave an academic presentation entitled “Application of time-shifted tomography to reveal coseismic changes and post-earthquake recovery processes in the Longmenshan fault zone”in conference room 301 of our institute on May 7, 2019.

Researcher Pei Shunping has long been committed to study of the deep structure of the earth by means of tomography. He has made innovative research achievements in 4D imaging technology, combining anisotropy imaging technology with attenuation imaging technology and applying these techniques to exploration of the structure of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and the surrounding areas. He has published more than 60 papers in Nature Geoscience, JGR, GRL and other journals, and presided over many “National Natural Science Foundation of China” projects and other projects. He has also won the third prize of natural science in Hubei Province, the Lu Jiaxi Young Talent Award, the Li Shanbang Young Excellent Thesis Award, the Fu Chengyi Young Science and Technology Award, and the Liu Guangding Geophysical Young Science and Technology Award.

In this academic presentation, Researcher Pei Shunping introduced his and his collaborators' recent research on the temporal variation of the velocity structure before and after strong earthquakes in the Longmen Mountain area. They obtained a reliable crust velocity structure for Longmen Mountain by means of time-shift tomography. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the velocity structure before and after the Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes was applied to elucidate the spatial and temporal distribution of the stress drop caused by strong earthquakes in the Longmen Mountain area. The stress caused by a strong earthquake significantly decreases and gradually recovers after the earthquake, revealing that the seismogenic mechanism of strong earthquakes was present for a period of time in three concave–convex bodies (the Yingxiu, Beichuan and Lushan bodies) in the Longmen Mountain area. In addition, Researcher Pei Shunping also illustrated the temporal variation of the velocity structure in Yunnan during the same period, and analyzed and discussed the coordination and transformation of tectonic movement deformation in the Longmen Mountain and Yunnan areas.

The presentation was attended by more than 40 scientific research personnel, and the participants enjoyed a fruitful discussion. The academic atmosphere was active and the participants benefitted a great deal.
