Associate Professor Zhuang Jiancang from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics came to the Institute of Geology for academic exchange

At the invitation of Associate Research Fellow Wang Lifeng, Associate Professor Zhuang Jiancang from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics paid a visit to our institute on May 17, 2018, and gave an academic presentation entitled “Extensions of clustering models and seismicity data analysis”.
Associate Professor Zhuang Jiancang is an important participant in the global CSEP program and an organizer of previous international conferences on statistical seismology. His research group is the research and development team of the internationally renowned earthquake activity model, the “Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS)” model. The “Next 1-day ETAS” prediction model developed by them has been installed and tested in SCEC of the United States, ERI of Japan, GNS of New Zealand and ETH of Switzerland under the CSEP program. In this presentation, Professor Zhuang introduced the further statistical and fault physical expansion of the classical ETAS model, including expansion of the two-dimensional spatial ETAS model to an ETAS model with depth information and a statistical model combining a finite fault model and seismic moment tensor information to understand the physical process of seismicity. After the meeting, Professor Zhuang had a heated discussion with experts, scholars and students of our institute on many issues of statistical seismology.
