Invited by Li Ni, SeniorResearcher Isoji Miyagi from National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan came to IGL for academic exchange and visit during June 15~21, 2016. Miyagi visited the petrology laboratory and conducted the field investigation of Changbaishan Tianchi Volcano with Chinese researchers.

During his lecture,Isoji Miyagi gave the brief introduction of AIST, and talked about the researches he has done in the past few years. He also introduced the research on volcanic minerals, water content of magma and degassing process of some volcanoes in Japan.

Afterwards, accompanied by Researcher Li Ni, Dr. Isoji Miyagi visited China’s largest modern active volcano – Changbaishan Tianchi Volcano, further knew the scale of the caldera, therock composition, and the distribution of tephra from the Millennium Eruption. He observed and collected the pumice and debris flows in the northeast of the cone, and discussed the dynamic process of debris flows after eruption. They investigated the pumice in Naitoushan quarry more than 10km to the north of the volcanic cone and observed pumice thickness and distribution of carbonized wood in the rain.

During the visit, Dr. Isoji Miyagi introduced the research progress of Japanese scholars on Changbaishan Tianchi Volcano and the condition of Japanese Aso Caldera, providing comparison and reference for project team’s research of explosion and eruption of similar volcanoes, and also laying a foundation for further cooperative research.
