Research Scientists Including Liu Jing Attended 2015 GSA Annual Meeting

2016/6/7 14:39:50

2015 GSA Annual Meeting organized by Geological Society of America (GSA) was ceremoniously [J1] held in Baltimore, U.S.A November 1~4. The annual meeting is one of the most important academic activities of GSA and has large international influence. During the meeting this year, the Second Joint Scientific Meeting of GSA and GSC was held jointly.

Research scientists Liu Jing, Zhang Huiping and Post-Doctor Li Zhigang from the Institute of Geology attended this meeting. Liu Jing also presided as a convener over the sessuib “Bridging Two Continents: Active Intra-continental Tectonics in Asia and North America and the Associated Geohazards”. Within this session, Liu Jing made an oral presentation titled “Cumulative offsets revealed by newly-acquired airborne LiDAR data along the Laohushan section of the Haiyuan fault, northern Tibetan Plateau” , which introduced their latest scientific results- accumulated slip in Laohushan section of the Haiyuan fault, northern Tibetan Plateau disclosed by airborne LiDAR. Zhang Huiping reported his team’s progress in instantaneous landform development of Daxiahe River Basin in northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Post-Doctor Li Zhigang also made an oral presentation titled “What controls the development of the steep and high-relief Longmen Shan, eastern Tibetan Plateau?” , which focused the main controlling factors of the steep and high-relief Longmen Shan, eastern Tibetan Plateau. At the conference, in addition to attending the above mentioned session, they also attended a variety of sessions,  such as Nepalese earthquake, structural geology, geomorphology, sedimentary basin, geotectonics and tectonophysics, geophysics and geodynamics, and quaternary geology.

Researcher Liu Jing, researcher Zhang Huiping and Post-Doctor Li Zhigang attended exchange and discussion during meeting

About 7400 geoscience workers from 58 countries attended this meeting. The meeting set joint topics and disciplinary topics in total of 342 sessions, mainly covering the fields of structural geology, geotectonics and tectonophysics, geophysics and geodynamics, quaternary geology, geomorphology, sedimentology, petrology, hydrogeology, atmospheric sciences, geochemistry, paleontology and paleoclimatology. The meeting invited geoscientists from all over the world to discuss relevant fields of earth, planet and space sciences and provided a platform of work display, communication and exchange for young and mid-aged scientists. Through this meeting, Chinese and American geologists comprehensively raised the level of exchange and cooperation between geological societies between the two countries and promoted all-round development of global geological sciences.

Through attending this 2015 GSA Meeting, we introduced our scientific research achievements to international peers, raised the international influence of China in research of structural geology, active tectonics and geomorphology, and also learned new technologies and thoughts from international peers. Among numerous topics we attended, the greatest impression is that people attending the international conference, particularly the conveners of special sessions, are mostly young geologists, many conveners are at an age of 30-35, and these young scholars mostly are outstanding in their respective research fields. Therefore, they also become learning examples of Chinese young geological scholars. Besides, we also found Chinese geological scholars have made breakthrough development in more and more research fields and raised international influence of Chinese geological research in the recent years.
