Scientists of Institute of Geology attended the 2015 8th World Chinese Geological Congress

In the past 20 years, Mainland and Taiwan have held many seminars relating to geoscience. From 1995 on, Chinese organizations of various communities have held World Chinese Geological Congressfor seven times in Taipei, Beijing, Stanford University, the University of Hong Kong, Nanjing University, Taiwan Lung Tan Science Park, Chifeng City of Inner Mongolia, and Chengdu University of Technology in Sichuan. These meetings provide a regular platform  to Chinese scholars in the field of geosciences all over the world for academic discussion and exchange.

This year is the 32nd anniversary of the Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. It hosted the 2015 8th World Chinese Geological Congress under the joint efforts of the geological and geophysical colleagues of the Taiwan region. The meeting time is June 15-21, 2015. This meeting is a large gathering of Chinese geoscience workers in the world. More than 300 scholars from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan and overseas Chinese attended the meeting.

The meeting determined 15 topics in advance, covering most disciplines and directions of geosciences. Those with a close relation with earthquake disaster mitigation are active tectonics, geological hazards and their prevention and control, research of earthquake sources, the latest results of geological studies on the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, deep structure of the earth and high-pressure experiments, and research of earthquake precursors. Besides, this Congress especially added a new topic -- “Research of the Nepal and the latest earthquakes”. Because the Nepal quake on April 25, 2015 and its aftershocks caused enormous human casualties and property loss, which also affected Chinese Tibet and northern Indian. This section helped people learn the source characteristics of Nepal seismic sequence, further probe into its seismogenic environment and the future seismoactive trends of neighboring areas and judge seismic risk of the Tibetan plateau, 

Multiple venues were arranged for the congress. Different topics might be conducted simultaneously. All the topics proceeded in forms of oral report and poster display from June 15 to 16. Field geological study was organized June 17-21.

This time, the people of our institute attended multiple topics. On the morning of June 15, Researcher Xu Xiwei made a report titled “Stratified crustal shortening under the Longmenshan thrust belt, Tibetan plateau” under  “Latest seismogeological research findings in Wenchuan” on special invitation. The report summarizes the major findings since the attack of Wenchuan Earthquake and displayed the latest results of underground structure revealed by seismic transmission profile in the middle section of Longmenshan. On the morning of June 16, Researcher Xu Xiwei presided over the topic “Research of Nepal and the latest earthquake”, made a report titled “Earthquake-induced landslide in Nepal in 2015: Significant negative effect of low-angle dip of seismogenic fault” and introduced the latest research progress on landslides induced by Nepalese earthquake and the future research plan of the research team, arousing warm response from the scholars present at the meeting. Researcher Wang Ping made a report titled “Sedimentation, age and significance of glacier damming lake at the entrance of Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon in the southeast of Tibet Plateau”. The report was commented by the host as a wonderful report. Assistant Researcher Tan Xibin and the peers from Taiwan jointly presided over the topic “the latest seismogeological research findings in Wenchuan”. Associate Researcher Song Xiaogang and Assistant Researcher Tan Xibin made oral reports in different topics. The titles are “Acquisition of fine velocity field of Haiyuan-Liupanshan transfer zone based on InSAR and GPS” and “Difference between central fracture and front-range fracture in the middle section of Longmen Mountain in Late Cenozoic vertical activity, and its tectonic significance”, showing the latest research findings of our institute in related research field. Researcher Ran Yongkang attended topic 5 “the latest seismogeological research findings in Wenchuan” and intended to made an oral report titled “Recurrence behavior of great earthquake in Longmenshan Fault Zone -  Wenchuan Earthquake: a rare great earthquake in the fault zone?”. Due to late arrival of the plane, the report was not arranged on schedule, but Researcher Ran Yongkang carried out extensive discussion with the counterparts about recurrence behavior of great earthquake in Longmenshan Fault Zone during the meeting and introduced the latest research findings in the aspect of paleo-earthquake of Wenchuan Earthquake. In addition, Researcher Qu Chunyan, Associate Researcher Zhang Guohong, Assistant Researcher Li Zhengfang, Assistant Researcher An Yanfang and doctoral candidate Chen Jinyu of our institute made poster reports and discussed with experts and scholars in related fields.

This World Chinese Geological Congress is high-level grand gathering of Chinese geologists in the world. The congress had many scientific topics for discussion, displayed significant scientific research achievements, closely focused on the frontier of science, paid attention of the latest hotspots, attracted many scholars from Chinese Mainland. Young teams were the highlights, exchange and discussion were extensive and it opened a new chapter of geosciences for Chinese people. Through this meeting, we again experienced the profoundness of geosciences, also saw the fruitful results and leading technical methods of Chinese peers in their respective fields and meanwhile knew our gap and shortfalls. In the future, we will make active effort in exchange and learning, learn from and discuss with the experts and scholars who are on the front edge of the disciplines, promote the research and breakthrough of China in seismotectonic environment and occurrence mechanism of strong earthquakes and make contribution to the undertakings of earthquake disaster mitigation.

After indoor report and exchange, the congress also arranged field geological study. The study route is Taipei-Taroko-Hainan Range-Chishang- Kenting-Riyuetan-Taipei. The duration is 5 days 4 nights. The study mainly includes characteristics of basement complex of Central Mountain Range and landform of the subduction zone at the southern tip, geological and geomorphic features of Haian Range and Huatung Valley, activity behaviors of Chishang Fracture, activity behaviors of Chelungpu Fracture and Chi-Chi Earthquake Reserve Park.

On the trip along the eastern coastline of Taiwan, we saw boundless blue Pacific Ocean, towering Central Mountain Range, Huatung Valley with abundant natural resources and the promising Hainan Range. During study, the teachers of Academia Sinica did their best to arrange all the things for the people participating in the investigation in a considerate way. It is very hot in Taiwan in June. In early morning, it was above 30℃. They were not afraid of hard work and did much work in advance. On the site, they sweated hard and explained to us. The sketch skill of teacher Li Jiancheng deeply impressed us. By a few strokes, he could clearly draw the tectonic positions of the investigation point and main tectonic models. It is really praise worthy.

The abundant geological landscape in Taiwan opened our horizon. The perfect preservation of the exploratory trench of Chi-Chi Earthquake and its positive role in promoting common knowledge on earthquake amazed us. The detailed explanation of the leading teacher opened a window for us to know the latest tectonic activities in Taiwan region. The active exchange and discussion among the teachers on the way greatly inspired us in future working methods and approaches.

Thanks to this congress and the study after meeting, we had more knowledge on the latest progress, frontier theories, methodologies and technologies of geosicence research at home and abroad and meanwhile we had an opportunity to investigate the ongoing violent geotectonic process in Taiwan region, while the beautiful scenery and colorful folk custom of Taiwan are also unforgettable. It is really a fruitful journey. This study also forged deep friendship among the teachers from different countries, cities and organizations and created favorable condition for future mutual cooperation and contacts.
