Prof. Hu Zhiqing of National Taiwan University Visited Mainland

At the invitation of Researcher Shan Xinjian of the Institute of Geology, three scientists from Department of Geosciences, National Taiwan University including Prof. Hu Zhiqing came to our institute and formed a joint field scientific study group with researchers Shan Xinjian and others. From August 05 to 15, 2015, they carried out field study on the fault at the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains, Haiyuan fault and Minle-Damaying section of the Qilian Mountain north-edge fault. During the scientific study, they undertook academic exchange with the researchers of Lanzhou Earthquake Research Institute of China Earthquake Administration and the Earthquake Administration of Qinghai Province.

The group firstly examined the Suyukou exploratory trench of the fault at the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains. Researcher Chai Chizhang of the Earthquake Administration of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region introduced in details the excavation of this trench, scientific study of historical earthquakes, research progress, and protection of historical sites. On the basis of the previous research of InSAR and GPS measurements in the Haiyuan fault zone, the scientific study group mainly studied the co-seismic phenomenon remained after the 1920 Haiyuan great earthquake. In the Earthquake Administration of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, guided by Senior Engineer Jiao Decheng and related people of Ningxia Haiyuan Seismostation and Haiyuan County Earthquake Administration, the study group surveyed and sampled the scratches formed during the attack of the Haiyuan earthquake. Meanwhile, they also studied maximum horizontal displacement point of Shikaguangou, dry salt pond ridge dislocation and scarps, earthquake-hit willow in Shaomaying, and other typical landforms. During the study, the scientific study group discussed and studied the generation and occurrence of the 1920 Haiyuan great earthquake, rupture length of the fault, fault form, hindering effect of basins on earthquake rupture, high-resolution DEM fine landform measurement, and large-scale mapping of the fault. During study of Minle-Damaying section of the Qilian Mountain north-edge fault, the scientific study group came out with new views on the offset of landform in this area and carried out reasonableness analysis and discussion on the site. The scientific study group also visited Haiyuan seismic station, Haiyuan Earthquake Museum and Qilian County seismic station, asked about the details of earthquake detection items and routine work of every station, and provided related information and exhibition suggestions on the phase-2 construction of Haiyuan Earthquake Museum.

During field scientific study, the scientific study group also carried out academic exchange in Lanzhou Earthquake Research Institute of China Earthquake Administration and the Earthquake Administration of Qinghai Province, and reached cooperation intention on the cooperation and mutual visits in related fields.

During the study, the two parties exchanged ideas and discussed the research work of the bilateral cooperation “NSFC Cross-Straits Cooperation Project – Research on deformation characteristics of the Altun-Haiyuan fault zone on the northern boundary of Tibetan plateau and its mechanism”, explored some scientific issues, such as how to use InSAR and GPS data to analyze the ratio of deformation of the Tibetan plateau shared by the Altun-Haiyuan fault, the mechanism for control of deformation on the northeastern margin of Tibetan plateau, reached a consensus and intended to implement it in the research at next step.
