State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics and Utrecht University held bilateral “Workshop on Dynamic of Faulting and Earthquake”

2014/5/22 17:46:50

According to the cooperative agreement signed by and between the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamicsand the Faculty of Geoscience of Dutch Utrecht University, with the approval of the Department of International Cooperation, CEA, ten scientists from the Faculty of Geoscience of Dutch Utrecht University including Prof. C. Spiers came to China and attended “Workshop on Dynamic of Faulting and Earthquake” hosted by State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics. The workshop was held in the Institute of Geology, CEA from October 22 to 24, 2013. More than 40 scientific researchers and postgraduates from the Faculty of Geoscience of Utrecht University, the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University, and the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics attended the workshop. The chairmen of the meeting are Researcher Ma Shengli and Prof. Spiers. At the workshop, 23 scholars made academic lectures. Broad discussion and exchange were conducted after every report. The contents of the reports include: frictional behavior of faults, petrophysics of fault zones, deformation mechanism and fabric of faults, mechanical models and constitutive relations of faults, earthquake-triggered landslides and induced earthquakes, and evolution of the physical field of deformation and forerunners of instability of faults. During the workshop, the guests from Utrecht University visited the Tectonic Physics Laboratory subordinate to the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics. Ma Shengli, He Changrong and Yang Xiaosong introduced the laboratory equipment and related research projects of the laboratory and discussed in details the performance indicators, experimental methods, experimental flow and other technical issues of the equipment with Dutch friends.

In the recent years, the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics actively pushed on the cooperation and exchange with the Faculty of Geoscience of Dutch Utrecht University and produced good results in personnel exchange, academic communication, joint publication of papers, and initiation of postgraduate courses. Through this workshop, Dutch friends had general knowledge on the condition of experimental equipment of tectonic physics and research progress of our institute, and our people had learned the new progress of Dutch Utrecht University in the research of rock mechanics and seismology. The workshop played an important role in promoting cooperation between the two sides. During the workshop, they discussed the cooperation in the next step and reached some preliminary agreements.
