Laboratory of Tectonophysics

Laboratory of Tectonophysics has insisted upon experimental study by means of large-scale high-pressure and auxiliary test equipment since it was founded. With continuing improvement in scientific thinking, the Laboratory keeps upgrading equipment for new research with featured academic cultural tradition, scientific background knowledge and corresponding working platform. Up to now, the Laboratory has been in a good state for succession and development.


After faster growth at the beginning in the 1980s and big changes during the end of the 1980s and at the beginning of the 1990s for various reasons, the Laboratory has possessed relatively stable staff, 13 members in all. Namely, 6 Senior Research Fellows (including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences), 2 Associate researchers, 2 assistant researchers, 1 engineer, 1 assistant engineer and 1 research assistant. For temporary personnel, a great number of postgraduates and postdoctorates provide strong staff support for research work. At present, there are 23 PhDs & Master’s Degree candidates and 3 postdoctorates and the number is increasing.

Equipment

1.      Upon our experience for years, a batch of facilities for large rock mechanics, petrophysics experiment and relevant test equipment have been newly-built or renovated. The representative equipment and auxiliary test systems include the constitutive experiment on fault sliding under the condition of high pressure, high temperature and hot water; complicated large samples of rock deformation with multi-physical quantity/channels, complicated experimental system for fault sliding; ultrahigh pressure tri-axial experimental system with solid media 3GP; petrophysics experimental system under the condition of high pressure and high temperature (elastic wave velocity and specific conductivity); ultra-low permeability survey system, etc, which can preliminarily satisfy the demand for indoor constitutive physical experiment and scientific benefits have been achieved indeed.


2.      A batch of very important test and sampling equipment for the study of petrophysics and rock deformation is purchased with the state special fund for repair/purchase of equipment, which include the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for micro-water content in rock; ion thinning instrument for sample preparation of transmission electron microscope; high precision & high-resistance specific conductivity meter; thermal conductivity meter; thermal imager for observing temperature field of rock deformation; micropolariscope and photographic system; high precision automatic polish-grinding device, etc.


3.      The high velocity friction experimental system under the condition of hot water is applied to study the course of coseismal slide; the equipment has been fixed and debugged before put into service.


Gas tri-axial rheometer is mainly used for high-temperature plasticity rheological experiment of rocks; the equipment is largely renovated from imported one, which has been successfully checked and accepted.


Tri-axial experimental system for 1000-ton large samples is mainly used for lithomechanics experiment with multi-channel and multi-parameter records under the condition of high pressure; the equipment will be completed and put into service in 2 years.
