On January 10 and 11, 2019, the Y4th Xiangshan Science Conferences on “Frontier scientific issues in tectonic geomorphology research on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau” was successfully held in Beijing. Researcher Zhang Huiping from the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration, Professor Tian Yuntao from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Nie Junsheng from Lanzhou University and Professor Wang Xianyan from Nanjing University were appointed as executive chairmen of the meeting. More than 40 experts and scholars from more than 20 domestic units attended the meeting. This conference focused on the core scientific issues of neotectonic chronology, the source and sink system of geomorphological evolution and the core scientific issues of plateau fluvial geomorphology. These issues were discussed in depth. Researcher Zhang Huiping gave a thematic review report entitled “Tectonic geomorphology research on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau”.

The Xiangshan Science Conferences were initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (the former State Scientific and Technological Commission) and officially launched in 1993 with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Xiangshan Science Conferences have received support and funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Science and Technology Commission of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, the National Health Commission, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China. Xiangshan Science Conferences are high-level, interdisciplinary, small-scale permanent academic conferences with the main objective of exploring the frontiers of science and promoting knowledge innovation. The conferences follow the executive chairman responsibility system. The conferences explore the frontiers and future of science in the form of critical review reports, special reports and further discussions. This is the fourth Xiangshan Science Conference named “Youth” since 2018.

The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is rich in structural deformation patterns and examples of different geomorphologic types and has a unique climatic background. The results of tectonic geomorphology research are expected to refine theories on and deepen our understanding of continental structural deformation and its dynamic mechanism and the evolution of the earth's surface system. Based on his research work in recent years, Researcher Zhang Huiping of our institute united with three other young scholars on “Frontier scientific issues in tectonic geomorphology research on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau” and obtained support from the Xiangshan Conferences Office. Progress in research and future development of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau were discussed. The success of the conferences has laid a foundation for further research on structural deformation and geomorphological evolution and on earthquake preparation and resulting secondary disasters, and contributed to the development of tectonic geomorphology in China and its international influence and competitiveness.
