The 2018 Geological Training Course on Earthquake Analysis and Prediction was concluded successfully in Hohhot

2018/8/31 15:05:17

To improve earthquake situation tracking and earthquake trend judgment of earthquake analysts and forecasters, and to better combine and apply the new results of earthquake geological research, from August 20 to 26, 2018, the "Geological Basic Theories and Methods Training Course of Earthquake Analysis and Prediction", organized by the Institute of Geology of the China Earthquake Administration and co-organized by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau, was successfully held in Hohhot, entrusted by  the Department of Earthquake Monitoring and Prediction of China Earthquake Administration. Nearly 50 key personnel from provincial earthquake administrations and forecasting departments of directly affiliated units attended the training.

The Institute of Geology of the China Earthquake Administration attached great importance to the training course. During the preparatory process, Director Ma Shengli and Deputy Director Shan Xinjian asked about the preparation of the training class several times, and gave specific and detailed suggestions in some important links .

On the morning of August 21, the director of the Department of Scientific Research of our institute, Jiang Hanchao, attended the opening ceremony on behalf of the Institute of Geology and presided over the meeting. The director of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau, Dai Bosheng, attended and delivered a speech. He first welcomed the leaders, experts and students to Inner Mongolia in the fall of August  on behalf of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau, then introduced the basic situation of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. He hoped that everybody would exchange their experience during the training, and hoped to make progress with everyone on the path of earthquake prevention and disaster relief . He also wished the students a happy life and good grades. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Researcher Xu Xiwei wished everyone success during training.

Between August 21 and August 25, eight excellent lectures and 1 day of lively teaching practice in the field were arranged.Study of basic theory and methods was mainly conducted by Researcher Ma Shengli, Researcher Xu Xiwei, Researcher Shan Xinjian, Researcher Jiang Hanchao, Researcher Xu Jiandong and Specially Appointed Researcher Wen Xueze of the Institute of Geology as indoor training and activities. The researchers gave detailed explanations, from the basic theories to the latest achievements. They spoke about structural physical experiments of earthquake recurrence and the earthquake precursory mechanism, active tectonics and earthquakes, and crustal deformation and fault features. They also gave lectures on lacustrine sedimentology in the paleoearthquake record, plate tectonics and volcanic activities, and the geological basis of earthquake monitoring and prediction. At the end of each lecture, students actively asked questions, and the lecturers gave detailed answers.

Researcher Chen Lichun, Researcher Wen Xueze and Researcher Jiang Hanchao led all the students on a 1-day field study on August 22. They focused on studying of faulted landforms and paleoearthquake research along the Daqingshan front fault belt near Hohhot, the features and recognition of fault zones in the field, and the depositional features of lacustrine strata. After a day of field observation, detailed research and discussion, and vivid and systematic explanations by the leading teacher, the students had a certain perceptual understanding of the fault activity and topographical features of the Daqingshan front fault.

We made detailed plans and arrangements during the preliminary preparation, determination of the training content and selection of field geological survey sites, which made the training course a complete success and achieved the expected results. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau for their robust support throughout the training course. We would also like to thank the teachers for their careful preparation for and wonderful explanation on the course, and all the students for their cooperation and understanding in the training process.
