The 2017 Training Course for Earthquake Prediction and Geology was concluded successfully in Xining

To improve the capabilities of earthquake prediction personnel in seismic tracking and earthquake trend analysis, and to better integrate and apply new achievements in seismic geological research, the “Training Course for Earthquake Prediction and Geology” was held successfully in Xining, Qinghai, during August 20–26, 2017. This training resource was commissioned by the Monitoring and Forecasting Division of the China Earthquake Administration, sponsored by the Institute of Geology and China Earthquake Administration, and supported by the Qinghai Earthquake Administration. More than 50 personnel from other earthquake administrations and departments of forecasting attended this course, which comprised eight wonderful lectures and a one-day fieldwork session.

In a brief opening ceremony on the morning of August 21, 2017, Deputy Director Ha Hui of the Qinghai Earthquake Administration welcomed leaders and students to Xining, and he briefly introduced the seismic situation in Qinghai Province. Deputy Director Xu Xiwei of the Institute of Geology (China Earthquake Administration) introduced the objectives of the training course and outlined the expectations and requirements for all participants. It was hoped that the students would speak freely during the training process, to actively discuss, become inspired, develop related theories and methods, and work together to push forward the science of earthquake prediction and to contribute to China’s earthquake enterprise.

Academician Ma Jin, Prof. Xu Xiwei, Prof. Wen Xueze, Prof. Jiang Hanchao, Prof. Ma Shengli, and Prof. Shan Xinjian were invited to explore the topics of the unstable danger phase from a possible breach of earthquake prediction, active tectonics and seismology, the seismological–geological foundation of earthquake monitoring and forecasting, the significance of earthquake analysis in lacustrine sediments, earthquake recurrence and structural physics experimental studies of earthquake precursory mechanisms, and space-to-earth observations and seismogenic faults, respectively. A number of teachers also investigated the Jiuzhaigou Mw 7.0 earthquake, which occurred on August 8, 2017, from different perspectives. At the end of each lecture, a half-hour free question and discussion session was usually arranged. The students were enthusiastic in asking questions, which the lecturers answered in detail.

On the morning of August 23, Prof. Yuan Daoyang, Prof. Wen Xueze, and A.P. Li Zhimin led all the students on a one-day field-based teaching exercise in the rain. The main subjects of the study were right-lateral fault-slip geomorphology, typical landforms of a pull-type zone, identification of a fault in the profile along the line of the Riyueshan Fault near Xining, and the structural origin of the Qinghai Lake. After a day of on-the-spot inspections, detailed discussions, and vivid and systematic explanations by the teachers leading the team, all students had gathered some perceptual knowledge of the characteristics of the fault activities of the Riyueshan Fault and of their influence on the landscape. As the drizzle faded and the sun began to shine brightly, everyone took photos under the blue sky and white clouds.

The Institute of Geology of the China Earthquake Administration paid great attention to this training course. During the preparation phase, Prof. Shengli Ma asked to examine the details of the training resources several times and gave specific suggestions in some important aspects. It could be said that the detailed planning and arrangements for the entire training course, definition of the training content, and selection of the field geological surveys formed the basis for the success of the training course, which achieved its intended purposes.
