Institute of Geology carried out a dissemination activity on the Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day

May 12, 2017 is China’s 9th “Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day”. In order to better strengthen publicity of earthquake prevention and disaster reduction and establish awareness to this aspect, the Institute of Geology held a dissemination activity of “Earthquake prevention and disaster reduction day” of this year, with the title “Reduce community disaster risk and improve the capacity of disaster reduction at base level”.

At 9:00 am, at conference room 301 of the institute, Researchers Chen Jie, Gan Weijun and Nie Gaozhong introduced the profiles of State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, GPS crustal movement observation technology and its application to the study of Tibetan Plateau, and emergency rescue work concerned by the public to more than 20 students from China University of Geosciences (Beijing), and Beijing University. The students thought actively, spoke with enthusiasm and raised various questions related with earthquakes.The three researchers answered in details their questions and ardently expected young students could join China’s cause of earthquake prevention and disaster reduction after graduation.

After the seminar, students from China University of Geosciences (Beijing), and Beijing University visited State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics and Key Laboratory of Active Tectonics and Volcano of the institute. The laboratory personnel showed the students around the research units. During the visit, laboratory researchers not only gave elaborate introduction by referring to display boards and their scientific research projects but also demonstrated the operation of some instruments and equipment. They told the students that earthquake science experiment is an interesting work which needs carefulness and patience. Students showed great interest, raised questions enthusiastically and undertook practical operation. Some interested students even initiatively proposed tocontinue to maintain further exchange with the staff after the visit.

The activity ended with complete success. This activity not only enhanced students’ understanding on research of earthquake science, made many students pay attention to and show interest in earthquake cause, but also provided an opportunity for integrating theory with practice, and broadened their horizon of scientific research. The whole “Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day” publicity activity highlighted the theme and achieved the expected effect.
