Invited Lecture of Volcanoes at Beijing 101 Middle School

The sound of the bell rang and the noisy campus quieted down. The class 10 grade 7 of Beijing 101 middle school ushered in a special geography class at 14:30 May 9, 2017. Researcher Xu Jiandong of Institute of Geology was invited to be here to present the knowledge of volcanoes.

Researcher Xu gave a wonderful lecture on the volcanic origin, global volcano distribution, physical mechanisms of volcanic eruptions, volcanic disasters and volcanic monitoring. Xu prepared many pictures and videos for students to better understand the volcanic formation and eruption processes. When it came to volcanic eruptions and disasters, researcher Xu cited several well-known examples of volcanic eruptions at home and abroad and showed different effects of eruptions with a large number of photos and surveys. In particular, the students were amazed when Xu was talking about the Japanese discovery of the ash from the mountain Changbaishan which erupted in 946. In the end, researcher Xu told them about some of the interesting facts from field work at the  mount Merapi in Indonesia. While the students were feeling the tremendous energy of the volcano, they also had a keen interest in volcanic research.

After the bell rang again, students were still immersed in the wonderful volcanic world and discussed their concerns around researcher Xu.

The science popularization activity ended in a warm atmosphere. The teachers of 101 middle school were very grateful to the leaders of the institute for their attention to earthquake and volcanic science propaganda, especially to Xu Jiandong's vivid and abundant explanation. And they remarked it is necessary to bring earthquake and volcanic science propaganda into the campus and the life of the students.

The institute also left to the students The Earthquake Popular Science Knowledge 300 q&a and A Handbook for Youth on Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction so that the students can look up at any moment and the popularization of seismic science can be better normalized. To be sure, this science popularization activity received the expected effect.
