State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology Passed Appraisal of MOST

2016/6/7 16:21:40

Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) released the appraisal results of national key laboratories in the fields of mathematics and geosciences in 2015. State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology was rated as a good laboratory.

State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology is the only state-level key laboratory in the earthquake industry. Since 2003, the Laboratory has carried out basic research in the field of seismic science and basic research for application by centering on seismic mechanism and prediction – this frontier issue of science, and the social demand for earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation. The laboratory relies on tectonophysical experiment and simulation technology, active tectonics and chronologic technology, earth observation technology, mobile seismic array and seismic electromagnetic technology, and focuses on earthquake dynamics (earthquakemechanism, dynamic process, etc.) and strong earthquake prediction. Its major research directions are current tectonic deformation images and strong earthquake risk, three-dimensional fine structure and seismogenic environment of lithosphere, habits of active tectonics and law of occurrence of strong earthquake, and tectonic deformation mechanism and strong earthquake generation mechanism. Through the research of the relation between tectonic deformation and seismic activity, the Laboratory revealed the mechanism and dynamic process of continental strong earthquake, developed the theories and methods for physical prediction of earthquake and gradually established a scientific research, talent cultivation and academic exchange base influential in the research field of earthquake dynamics.

In May 2015, MOST entrusted National Remote Sensing Center of China and the Geographical Society of Chinato independently appraise 46 state key laboratories in the field of geoscience. This appraisal mainly assessed the laboratory development, operation and major achievements in the recent five years. The expert group listened to the work report of the laboratory director, carried out comprehensive review in July and eventually rated State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics as a good laboratory. It means the Laboratory passed the appraisal of MOST.
