The Project for Research of 3D Seismotectonic Subsection Model of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone and Prediction of Earthquake Locations Was Kicked off

On October 30, 2015, the working conference for kicking off the project for research of 3D seismotectonic subsection model of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone and prediction of earthquake locations (hereinafter referred to as “the Project”) was held in Jinan.  

Under the entrustment of the Monitoring and Forecasting Department, CEA, this meeting was organized by the Institute of Geology, CEA and undertaken by Earthquake Administration of Shandong Province. More than 30 experts from 13 organizations (departments) including the Monitoring and Forecasting Department of CEA, Earthquake Administration of Shandong Province, Earthquake Administration of Jiangsu Province, Earthquake Administration of Anhui Province, Earthquake Administration of Hubei Province, the Institute of Geology of CEA, the Institute of Crustal Dynamics of CEA, the Institute of Earthquake Science of CEA, Geophysical Exploration Center of CEA,the First Crustal Deformation Monitoring Center of CEA, the Second Crustal Deformation Monitoring Center of CEA, University of Science and Technology of China, and Wuhan University attended this meeting.

The meeting was presided over by Liu Xiqiang, the Deputy Director-General of Earthquake Administration of Shandong Province. After the speech of Director-General Chao Hongtai, Director Sun Jianzhong made a speech. Director Sun firstly affirmed the significance of the research of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone, and required the project team to take reference to the scientific research experience of Southern California Seismic Center, open up thoughts, adhere to and pay attention to talent cultivation and knowledge radiation in a long time, strengthen cooperation between provincial earthquake administration and scientific research institutions, and the cooperation between scientific research and prediction, and raise scientific cognition of earthquake prediction. Researcher Xu Xiwei introduced in details the scientific objectives, key scientific issues and research content of the Project, and put forward a working mode that combines geology with geophysics, deep structure with shallow structure, and static with dynamic. The representatives present at the meeting made full discussion, unanimously agreed with the scheme of the Project and hoped the Project could be implemented as soon as possible.

The meeting deliberated, discussed and determined the setting and principals of tasks of the Project, work that needs to be done in the Project in 2016, and sources of fund for the Project.

This meeting is a kickoff meeting of the Project and also a new starting point for in-depth cognition to the geometric, dynamic and kinetic characteristics of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone. The subsection model of its 3D seismotectonics will raise cognition to seismic risk level of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone in a period to come in a scientific manner and promote earthquake prediction research with physical significance and may also provide a scientific model for effective earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation in the areas with fast economic growth and dense population in eastern China. It is important embodiment of conversion from scientific research achievements to support of social development.
