Project “Exploration of Seismic Active Faults in China - Northern Section of North-South Seismic Belt”: Interim work meeting and field work inspection were completed successfully

2015/12/28 18:16:04

The project “Exploration of Seismic Active Faults in China - Northern Section of North-South Seismic Belt” is the third phase of the program China’s large-scale mapping of active faults, and also the largest one. The project spans from the border of Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan and Qinghai provinces to the border of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia, as well as most part of the Hexi Corridor. In order to check the progress of the project, assure project quality and urge its implementation, the Department of Earthquake Disaster Prevention, CEA organized relevant experts to hold an interim working meeting on this project in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province from June 30, 2015 to July 2, and conducted work inspection and field verification on all the tasks of the project led by Researcher Xu Xiwei of Institute of Geology, CEA. Li Yishi, the Deputy Director of Department of Earthquake Damage Prevention, CEA and Division Chief Zhang Liming were present at the meeting and guided the work. Researcher Wang Lanmin, the Director-General of Earthquake Administration of Gansu Province and inspection expert group members, subproject leaders, some technical backbones, and leaders of scientific research departments of some organizations undertaking subprojects, in total of more than 60 people attended the interim inspection meeting.

At this interim work meeting, the subproject leaders reported the implementation conditions of the project in details and consulted the experts at the meeting about the technical problems encountered during work. During the meeting, the experts and meeting participants spoke actively and engaged in active discussion on the common problems in subprojects. The experts pointed out the shortfalls in the current project work, gave pertinent and guiding opinions and suggestions, earnestly analyzed and discussed some problems of the subprojects and clarified the directions the implementation of the project should pay attention to and should break through in the future.

After the interim work meeting, the project organized the expert group consisting of the leaders of the competent department - Earthquake Damage Prevention Department, CEA, chief project leader and related experts to go to the two sides of the Hexi Corridor, the key areas of this mapping and carry out 4-day field inspection on field work of some subprojects from July 3 to July 7. On the site, the expert group listened to the introduction and report of subprojects on field work, analyzed and discussed related issues and geological phenomena in details and put forth opinions and suggestions on work and the concrete implementation plan for future work. For example, detailed mapping of typical landform points by new surveying and mapping technologies, location selection of paleo-earthquake research, division of mapping units, refining of geometric structures of faults.
