On February 10, 2015, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced “China Top 10 Scientific Progresses in 2014”. The result of basic research by Liu Qiyuan et al. at State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration titled “Verifying Tibetan plateau is expanding eastward in two forms: material flow of lower earth’s crust and slip of upper earth’s crust along fault blocks” was selected as the unique major scientific progress in geology.

The selection of “China Top 10 Scientific Progresses” was organized by the Center of Basic Research Management, MOST. Each year, the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Advisory Group of “973” Program as experts selected 10 achievements from among the basic research progresses in the last year. Through three years’ large-scale comprehensive analysis and research of seismic waveform data in western Sichuan, the research team led by Liu Qiyuan revealed the deformation form of eastward expansion of the Tibetan Plateau as well as the fundamental cause for the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.
