2015 (10th) Annual Geological Conference on the Tibetan Plateau was Held in the Institute of Geology

2015/12/28 14:09:27

To promote exchange of scientific studies on research of the Tibet Plateau, summarize important research results and explore major scientific issues on plateau research, the China Society on Tibetan Plateau has initiated the Annual Geological Conference on the Tibetan Plateau. The 2015 (10th) meeting was undertaken by State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology, CEA and held in the auditorium of the Institute of Geology on the third floor on February 7, 2015. Academician Zhang Peizhen, the Director of State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, and Academician Wang Chengshan of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) as the co-conveners of the annual conference attended and presided over the conference. The theme of this conference is the uplifting process and paleo-elevation of Tibetan Plateau. At the academic conference, people exchanged ideas and discussed the progress of the research on uplift and paleo-elevation of Tibet Plateau in recent years, existing problems, possible work, and research directions. More than 400 representatives from above 20 universities and scientific research institutes including Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Earthquake Administration, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Peking University, Nanjing University and China University of Geosciences (Beijing and Wuhan) attended the conference.

The annual conference invited 11 experts and young scientific researchers in related fields and was held in forms of short reports and long discussions. The report content covers the Cenozoic growth process of Tibet Plateau, different evidence recording paleo-elevation evolution and tectonic-climate interaction of the plateau, plateau uplift, denudation and aridification, shallow and deep tectonic processes and dynamics, and low-temperature tectonic thermochronological principle and application. The reports explained the profound in simple terms. People exchanged ideas in the latest research findings of Tibet Plateau in recent years and the scientific issues revealed by related research. In addition, the conference also carried out extensive and in-depth exchange and discussion. During free discussion, all the people put forth topics and issues of common interest and then summarized main topics, discussed them freely and explored the divergences in depth. The conference completed the scheduled agenda with success in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The representatives present at the conference looked for consensus on the research of Tibet Plateau, discussed the divergences and summarized and determined follow-up research directions, laying a foundation for deepening the research of the Tibetan Plateau and its dynamics. The organizing committee of the annual conference also determined the undertaker of 2016 (11th) Annual Geological Conference of Tibet Plateau is China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and the theme of the meeting is “Tethys evolution and mineralization”.
