State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics held a symposium on the Wenchuan earthquake

2014/5/22 17:17:05

The 2008 Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake revealed many new natural phenomena and scientific issues not recorded in earthquake history. In the past five years, Chinese workers for earthquake science continued research on this event from different perspectives and achieved a series of important progress. It is necessary to summarize the scientific research of the Wenchuan earthquake. For this reason, under the entrustment of the Department of Science and Technology, CEA, the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, Institute of Geology, CEA held a symposium on the Wenchuan earthquake in Beijing from August 21 to 26, 2013.

The State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics paid great attention to this symposium. Laboratory Director and Researcher Zhang Peizhen and Deputy Director and Researcher Ma Shengli made meticulous arrangement and sufficient preparation, and designated and invited keynote speakers one by one. The symposium focused on the following scientific issues: (1) Surface ruptures of the Wenchuan earthquake, paleo-earthquakes and active behaviors of the Longmenshan fault zone. (2) Deep structures of the Wenchuan earthquake and Longmenshan fault zone. (3) Co-seismic, pre-seismic and post-seismic crustal deformation of the Wenchuan earthquake. (4) Internal structure and physical and mechanical properties of the Longmenshan fault zone. (5) Accurate positioning of the Wenchuan earthquake and its aftershocks, focal mechanism, strong ground motion and rupture process. (6) Precursory anomalies in the far field and near field of the Wenchuan earthquake. (7) Cause analysis and mechanism research of the Wenchuan earthquake.

Li Ming, the Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, CEA, academicians Ma Jin and Deng Qidong from the Institute of Geology, CEA and all the leaders of the Institute of Geology, CEA were present at the symposium. The symposium invited experts from the Institute of Geophysics, the Institute of Crustal Dynamics, the Institute of Earthquake Science, China Earthquake Networks Center, Geophysical Exploration Center and the Second Crustal Deformation Monitoring Center of CEA, Sichuan Earthquake Administration, Yunnan Earthquake Administration, Gansu Earthquake Administration, Hubei Earthquake Administration and other relevant organizations. Most research personnel of the State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics were present at the symposium. More than 90 people in total attended the symposium.

In respect to the themes for discussion, the conveners of special topics and the reporters of themes summarized the progress and breakthroughs in the five years after the Wenchuan earthquake, intensively discussed the issues in dispute and finally put forth the follow-up work arrangement plan. Through this symposium, people further understood the breeding process of the Wenchuan earthquake and deepened their knowledge on generation mechanism of the Wenchuan earthquake.
