2014/5/22 17:07:50

National 7th Volcanology Symposium was held in Haikou, Hainan from October 21 to 25, 2013. The meeting was co-organized by the Institute of Geology of China Earthquake Administration, the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Volcanology Committee of China Association for Disaster Prevention, the Committee for Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth’s Interior of Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry and the China Committee of IAVCEI and undertaken by Hainan Earthquake Administration. About 120 representatives from more than 40 organizations including Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Earthquake Administration, higher learning institutions and the Ministry of Land and Resources. Researcher Fan Qicheng, the Director of the Volcanology Committee of China Association for Disaster Prevention and from the Institute of Geology of China Earthquake Administration gave opening remarks and made a reelection work report. He reviewed the research history of Cenozoic volcanoes and research progress of active volcanoes in China, put forth scientific issues and thinking in the aspect of research of Cenozoic volcanoes in China and emphasized the importance of the research of volcanoes inside the continent. Researcher Xu Yigang, the newly elected director of the Committee for Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth’s Interior of Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry spoke highly of the excellent contribution of Researcher Fan Qicheng in the 10 years when he was the director of the Committee for Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth’s Interior of Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry and expressed heartfelt thanks to Researcher Fan Qicheng on behalf of all the people attending the meeting. Yao Yupeng, the Director of the Department of Earth Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China called on active application for projects under volcanological fund. The leaders of Hainan Earthquake Administration were present and made speeches at the meeting.

Academician Liu Jiaqi from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences made brief review and consideration on the research of Chinese volcanoes. Professor Martin Menzies, a famous geochemist and volcanologist from Royal Holloway, University of London summarized new progress of tephra research.  Mao Jianren from Nanjing Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources reported petrological record of Late Mesozoic compression – extension tectonics of Qinhang Suture Zone (eastern section). Lei Jianshe from the Institute of Crustal Dynamics, China Earthquake Administration obtained deep and fine textures of Changbai Mountain Volcano, Tengchong Volcano, Hainan Volcano and other few volcanic fields by using voluminous high-quality data recorded by mobile and stationary seismic stations. More than 40 academic reports of the meeting fully reveal the important progress in the geology and environment of Quaternary volcanoes in China, causes and eruption mechanisms of continental active volcanoes, effects of continental volcanism on resources and environments, and detection and monitoring of active volcanoes. The representatives also visited the Holocene volcano geological heritage in northern Hainan. During the meeting, the reelection of the Fifth Volcanology Committee of China Association for Disaster Prevention was successfully completed, the Sixth Volcanology Committee was set up, and Researcher Guo Zhengfu from Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences was elected as Director of the Sixth Volcanology Committee.

The meeting was closed in a warm atmosphere and achieved the expected result and complete success.
