Ma Zongjin

Ma was admitted to the Department of Geology of Peking University in 1951. In 1952 he was transferred to study in Beijing Geological College due to faculties’ adjustment and stayed on to teach after graduation in 1955. In 1961, he received his Master’s degree in science and from Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1966, he was the director of the  earthquake prediction team of the Central Earthquake Working Group, deputy director of the Analysis and Prediction Center and director of the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration. In 1991, he served as the director of Natural Disaster Research Group under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC (MOST), the State Development Planning Commission (SDPC), and the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC).In the same year he was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now he is a doctoral advisor in Peking University, the honorary director of the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration and director of the Expert Council, National Committee for Disaster Reduction. He also serves as an executive director of Chinese Society for Sustainable Development, executive director of the Geological Society of China, honorary chief editor of Seismology and Geology, and editorial board member of Science China, Chinese Science Bulletin, and ACTA GEOLOGICA STNICA.

Representative Research Results:  Study on mechanical properties, period division, and matching problems of joints. Mechanical analysis of Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic in Hubei Province. 1966 -1976 China’s nine major earthquakes. Comparison of earthquakes between the United States and mainland China. Division of earthquake’s generation and prediction stages. Three main research branches of earthquake prediction research—seismogenesis, earthquake history and earthquake precursors. On global seismotectonic systems. Essence of the plate tectonics theory, fault-block tectonics and seismic network phenomenon. Slab tectonics displayed by the South American subduction zone. Rhythmicity and anti-symmetry in the earth’s changes. China’s systematic engineering of natural disaster reduction. China’s major natural disasters and disaster reduction countermeasures. Present-day crustal movement problems. Global Cenozoic-Mesozoic tectonics. Scientific thinking habits and logic thinking in seismology.  Creative thinking and geonomy revolution. In recent years, he has conducted studies on Chinese Mesozoic and Cenozoic regional tectonics and present-day crustal movements, three tectonic systems of the Earth and Earth asymmetry, and continental dynamics of the basin-range coupling. Part of his research interests remains to focus on geometry, kinematics and dynamics of global plate tectonic.


International Exchanges and Cooperation: Ma has given lectures in theUnited Statestwice since 1980. He has visited overseas a dozen of times including the United States, Russia, Japan, Italy, Turkey, France, etc, and been to Taiwan four times to give lectures or exchange.

Research Results: Ma has published more than 200 papers and 20 monographs or compiled works. He has trained a number of graduate students, and won the second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award once, the third-class national science award once, and the first-class prize of China Earthquake Administration five times.
