Ma Jin

Ma Jin was born in 1934. She is a Senior Research Fellow and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. She graduated in 1962 from the Institute of Tectonophysics, USSR Academy of Sciences with Ph. D. degree. She is now the director of the Academic Committee of State Key Laboratory of Earthquake Dynamics, senior member of the China Society on Tibetan Plateau Research, and honorary senior member of Seismological Society of China.

Ma Jin’s research area is tectonophysics. Over three decades, she has conducted field investigation, laboratory simulation and theoretical analysis on the physical mechanism of tectonic deformation and the associated practical problems, including fold formation mechanism and the physical simulation of the stress field; deformation and seismic activity of suture (block) systems, including the types of tectonics and earthquake migration, focal mechanism, earthquake sequence and precursor types, conjugate fault rotation and alternating activities, acoustic emission and other physical evolution and instability precursors during tectonic deformation; relation between fault material composition and deformation mechanisms and fault mechanic behaviors as well as the response to environmental factors. Ma Jin presided over a number of important projects of China Earthquake Administration, and published more than 100 articles or books at home and abroad. She received 10 awards of ministerial level for outstanding achievements in science and technology and has trained more than 20 graduates with Ph.D. or Master’s degree.

Ma Jin studied at the Department of Survey and Exploration, Beijing College of Geology from 1952 to 1956. From 1958 to 1962, she studied and graduated from the Institute of Tectonophysics, USSR Academy of Sciences with a Ph. D. degree in Science. She worked as an intern researcher in the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1956 to 1958, and as assistant researcher in the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences from1962 to 1978. Since 1978 to now, she has been working at Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration. She was promoted to Associate Research Fellow in 1978 and to Senior Research Fellow in 1981, and has served as deputy director and director of the Research Division of Tectonophysics, director of the Academic Committee of the institute. In 1986, she took the position as PhD advisor and visited or conducted academic exchanges to the United States, Japan, the Soviet Union, Canada and other countries during the period. In 1983, she worked as a visiting scholar in the US Geological Survey. Ma Jin was elected to be an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997.
